Excess Skin

Submitted by Dave B. on 4/23/99. ( dbart10@osagecon.missouri.org )

I have had a problem with some deer heads every now and then,
that I have to much skin between the ear but and back of eye.
I cant seem to work all of it out and if I put the ear butts back farther
then they are not accurate. I cant figure out if its the antler placement,
or what. I use McKenzie forms, and most of the time 98% the fit is ok.
Any suggestions are appreciated,thanks. Dave

Wrinkles

Look at some photos, deer seem to have wrinkles in this area sometimes even with ears back. just recreate these wrinkles and things should fall into place.

To much for that

I have to much skin for that there is a problem with something else,
I have probably 2" of skin. Like I said only on a mount every now and then. And cant seem to know why.

I like the last answer, but...

...give us an idea of the size cape and which number and size McK form and that MAY help us...also, measure how far the antler base is from the front corner of the eye. That would give us something concrete to work with. Like Paul said, you can use up a lot of skin making the natural wrinkles around the burr and earbutts.

SAME PROBLEM

For the life of me i have this same problem, no matter what form i use.Ears back, not a problem. Is this a common problem?I even take measurements betwen the eye and antler base. Any suggestions thanks! Rick,

Loose skin....

Like Bill stated earlier must of the excess skin can be eliminated with a good measurement from the corner of the eye to the bottom of the burr(up underneath). Also as you may or may not know when we flesh and shave these areas they will gain alittle in size do to the thinning and tugging an such...Mannikin selection ,measurements , reference, fleshing and correct taxiing of the skin can all be factors in this situation.

Excess again

This response submitted by Dave B. on 5/2/99. ( )

Its me again, I checked the measurement from front corner eye to antler burr, and was 3" like Bill said should run , on average. Like Rick said, ear back is no problem. Most of my deer run 7" nose to eye measurement and I use same size mannikan. Last deer I mounted I did play with the skin a lot more like Paul said , I tried to create the wrinkles and did get rid if some more skin. I never used to have this problem before till I started paying attention to where my ear butts are sopposed to be on the mannikan, and started moving them forward, are the earbutt sets on McKenzie mannikans correct or should I rasp them off.

I move them further back

On McKenzie forms I cut the approach to the ear butt off, and move the ear back. I measure that, too. It would be hard to explaim that on the forum but I found some average distances there, too.
