Peacock Bass Habitat?

Submitted by BC on 9/13/00. ( ) 209.130.184.195

I'm working on a peacock bass reproduction...

It's turning out to be a "pet project" that began about 3 months
ago...I work on it when I'm not doing customer work...(more often than not). It may become an entry in a future competition if all goes well, however I have began to think ahead to the habitat...

I havent been to South America, so what would be proper vegitation, animal life, or possible baitfish species for a Peacock Bass?...

I Know...do more research, I've heard it before...I do plenty, but
this time I am having a hard time finding stuff. I'm assuming someone out there has had experience with a Peacock Bass customer. They are growing in popularity with fisherman-travelers that are getting bored with domestic species, (or they just have the money to travel the world fishing for whatever)...

Nevertheless, I was thinking about maybe a tiny Cayman on a log or swimming above the clown colored bigmouth, but I would greatly appreciate any other suggestions for the scene. Anything natural to the habitat of the thing.

Thanks
BC

Been to Venezuela twice fishing for them. Fished at Lake Gruri both times which is a huge lake with lots of flooded timber etc. Peacocks are found in most of the rivers of Venezuela and Brazil. The rivers go out of their banks during the rainy season so anything goes on general habitat... mud, rocks, timber, driftwood etc. The peacocks on Guri chased a particular baitfish but I couldn't catch the name from the guide, he spoke english about as well as I spoke spanish. They will school up like white bass (small schools and chase the bait. The topwater baits that you use immitate a school of baitfish busting the surface. The waters are also filled with pirahnas. Those nasty little buggers eat off the edges of the peacocks fins. It's rare to see a peacock with perfect fins.At the last world show Ron Kelly did a small peacock along with a couple of pirahnas that was super.I don't think the judges undersood the story that was being told. Also there are lots of color variations on peacocks and intermixing of the various types. Larry Larson Publications has two books on peacocks that have tons of information. Unfortunately just black and white photos. E-mail me if you need the address for the book, they are only about $12.
