Fish Smell

Submitted by Bryan on 10/5/00. ( wildlifedesigns@hotmail.com ) 208.171.196.185

I Have only mounted a few fish and have had no problems until now. I mounted a LG bass about 2 months ago and the mouth area still smells like fish. I am very sure that the head is clean because I really tore it apart. After the first couple of day's It was mounted It smelled like rotting fish so I sprayed some ammonia and water on it and set it up so it could dry better. So is there something I could use to rid the fish of this smell, Thanks in advance.

I have never liked to let a fish dry naturally.
I recommend that you place it under a fan, blowing directly in the mouth.

if this fish still smells when dry (which should take less than 48 hours with a fan) then something is wrong.
I'd either soak him up,take it apart, clean and re-mount, ----------or soak him in a lysol/borax solution for a few hours, then reposition and dry with
a fan.

Good Luck
Dave

Bryan,
I'm assuming that it's an open mouth mount. (If not, did you remove the gills?) I agree with Dave, unless you didn't remove the cheek meat, there should be nothing LEFT to smell for such a long time. I've let fish dry both ways, but I usually let them dry naturally. I put cardboard spacers between each set of gills to cut down on that contact.

Newton Supply carries a great product to eliminate the odor. It's called Creolin and it sprays directly on the source. It also keeps bugs away. But I, like Dave, think you may have something else wrong.

On the side of the fish that will not show drill a tiny hole around the center top of the head big enoughf to inject with a seringe .Inject with emboming fluid or rittles preservs it.this will take care of the problem ,if it has been 2 months since it was mounted and it stinks you can bet you left something uncleaned.

do what dave says

do what dave says, but you could pour some borax powder in its mouth and in the gills to help "pickle" it a little more
