Not the oven-ready variety either. Actually pieces of lath cut about 12-18" long and attached to the back of the fish with a drywall screw. I pre-drill both ends, so that the fish can be hung from nail in a rack or celing while drying as well. Painting sticks are fast & easy to make, dozens in an hour, and are cheap to boot. The paint sticks can be screwed or c-clamped to a traditional mounting stand, or a small box constructed of plywood, about 3 x 3 x 6" tall, with an overlapping baseplate can be clamped or screwed to your countertop.
I find the stick-holding-boxes (okay, get your minds outa the gutters:) to be really handy when you paint your fish in batches and want to handle and change them quickly.

I used an old garage fan stand and made it work to do what I needed.
It's very sturdy and very wide at the bottom. I found mine at a garage
sale, try that or look at the ones they sell in WASCO or any of the other supply companies and try to build one yourself. I used to use my
old alum. painting easel (artists easel) for the smaller fish, but it was'nt enoungh to hold the big guys. I hope this helps any.

And I'll be happy to e-mail you a couple of pics. You have the right idea. I buy packages of building lath approx. 3/8 thick x 2" wide x 3 feet long about 10 or 12 to a bundle from Lowes home improvment. Screw the fish to the stick tight enough so it dosen't spin, yet loose enough for you to rotate it. Because of the shape of a fish that is attached to a paint stick, it's not difficult to paint all but about a 1x1" square at the attachment point. This is generally the area that I would glue in dowels for attaching to driftwood or screws with a panel, so I don't worry that it will show.Of course these sticks are not used for pedestal mounts, they are attached to individual stands with support wires inserted at the prospective anchor points.

Scott,
I have a fish mounting stand you can have for free. That's how much I use it. I'ts good quality too. I paint 10 to 15 fish at a time so the stand isn't very efficient. I also use "sticks" and hang my fish from the rafters so air can get around them. I leave the "sticks" on until I'm done painting. If you screw the stick along the length of the fish you can still cover the back of the fish pretty well.
Send me your address; all I ask is reinbursement for the shipping which shouldn't be any more the 5 to 10 bucks.

Scott,
I sent you a fish mounting stand for free in good faith that you would reinburse me for shipping. I even included a stamped self addressed envelope to send the amount of shipping back.
What gives?
Cecil
Scot,
Thanks Scot I received your check. Just thought I'd vindicate you.
