oh ya forgot, what range of psi should a guy be looking for ?
You need to look at your needs for air volume, do you just want to air brush, or would you like to run an impact wrench to fix tires. Do you want to supply a shop with a large monster compressor, or have a little whisper quite bench model? Decide what your needs are, and buy the next size larger, someone said that you can never have too much air, but you can have to little. It is nice to have a compressor that can put out 150# if you wanted to fill a pressure tanner, or fix a tire. As far as pressure at the brush, you can get a regulator, most pumps have them already, but most brushes operate around 35 psi, it depends on the paint and what you are painting. However, buy the most you can spend on, having not enough air is a drag.
A tank will prevent pulsations that can be given off by smaller models. Also, give it a test run in the store. I bought a cheap one for my first tank model, and the damn thing sounded like a jet taking off. When you are in the middle of doing detail work on a fish and those things kick in, it can scare the *&^&*( out of you!
You need about 35 to 40 psi for airbrush and sealer and clearcoat applications with a touch up gun. Bigger is beter to some extent.
DON'T GET A CRAFTSMAN COMPRESSOR UNLESS YOU WANT A LOT OF NOISE!
Yes, look around and bigger is better tank that is, the bigger tank the less it will run. Lots of good affordable compressors out there.
Stay away from the oilless models, I have had three fail aka lock up.
if you want one that will last you a lifetime, find one with a Quincy pump.
