Are you saying he uses this stuff straight up? I suspect it is a component of Van Dykes fish fill, since it has a very gritty texture. Being a light volcanic rock, in some respects like pumice, there should be no problems with bugs eating it or anything else I can think of. Just curious if he has some method of using this by itself, without any added mache. It would not set up like fish fills I am familiar with...not on its own.
that is the only thing he put in his fish ,no other fill ,nothing mixed with it. he uses borax to preserve.
I'm skeptical expecially since the filler from Van Dykes that has perlite in it is garbage IMHO.
Perlite is like hard popcorn. You cannot "stuff" a fish full of this crap and expect it to retain shape or anything else. It is a loose fill. It would be a total disaster on thin-skinned fish like trout, although I would not even think of mounting a trout this way. And, I agree with Cecil...it is gritty crap. I have tried it and do not like it. Set-up time for this fill is so fast I can barely get it in the fish before it is hardening. Try WASCO's fish fill by Tom Sexton.
thanks guys! i appreciate your thoughts and responses to my question.
