How Long to Rehydrate....

Submitted by Will on 2/11/01. ( ) 204.180.108.133

A salted deer hide after it's dried hard?

I never used to salt the critters but after everything I've read here I decided it would be best to follow the advice of so many. I intend to pickle after it's rehydrated but I would like to know how long it takes so I can plan some things around it.

Thanks,

Will

It can take from 2hrs to almost 16hrs-max-I've heard longer also. I will start in the morning and do my work. By the afternoon I'm ready to pickle most of the hides. Some will do it before they leave their shop. Soak over night and pickle in the morning. It just varies on every species and how well it was fleshed, how big the cape is and so on.

Thanks Frank

Just checked on one that I had put in to soak last night. It's limp as a rag and in the pickle now! The first one took 4 hours and it still had a few hard spots so it looks like pickling and shaving in the mornings for a while!

Thanks again,

Will
