Competition Inner ear detail

Submitted by Mike B on 2/15/01. ( mbush@accn.org ) 216.120.155.20

My question is I have a linner that has the inner eat detail, but it does not fit the inner detail on the skin of the ear. Should I just cut the inner detail on the skin off and blend with epoxy? Or should I use another method that I don't know about? This will be my first competion mount so I don't know what the judges will be looking for.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Mike

what judges look for

Some advice...use reference don't worry about what judges are looking for. All judges are different and will have different things they look for, so don't get caught up in playing the judging game. Use plenty of reference and do your best to interpret what you see. You will learn from judges a great deal and they will improve your work tremendously but try to recreate nature with what you see remember you are recreating nature not trying to please the judges.

use reference VS what judges look for?

Im a judge. Im a taxidermist. I use reference. Soooo, when I judge, what do you suppose I look for? Not something different, from judge to judge. I look for what I (and you) see in our reference. As for your question, the ear skin isnt supposed to fit the inner ear detail in that liner. Its supposed to be trimmed and blend up to the detail in that liner's inner ear. Good luck at your first show!

Thanks Bill

Thanks for the info Bill I was wondering what to do with the liner more than what the judges were looking for. I do have reference cast and photo references. I just never used the liners with the detail before.

from judge to judge

Sorry Bill if you took offense to my comments about judges, maybe things have changed since the late 80's or early 90's but I doubt it. I have had judges some of the very best in the world at that time judge even simple things like drumming differently. One judge veiwed drumming as if I push the skin in on a live whitetail it will spring back so why take points off for drumming. This guy had one second in the world! Some judges do look for things differently than others and you can play the judging game, I used to plan ahead on who was going to be the judge and plan to meet what they would be looking for and was very successful doing it. I learned that it was wrong and not trying to do the best I could but I got caught up pleasing the judges eyes and not my own. I would be interested in your thoughts on this post. Thanks!
