Fitting antelope horns to manikin?

Submitted by Dave on 3/9/01. ( ) 204.39.224.248

I have a 13" necked antelope to mount, and purchased a 13" form. However, when fitting the skull cap to the manikin, I notice that it is a good 1/2 to 3/4" too small on each side. The problem with this is that the eyesocket on the skull cap and the eyesockrt on the form are at different depths. Please let me know what to do. I really appreciate it.

Model in the skull cap

Goe with the form size, model it to fit the form. The sculptors know more about most animals then many of the taxidermist trying to use them.

Most of us have had the same problems from time to time.

Same problem

Dave,

I always have the same problem, the skull cap never matches up with the top of the eye socket on the form. The orbit on the skull is narrower than the form's orbit. This must be a common problem with others. I do just as John says and model in the top of the orbit, it works. Someday maybe I will get an antelope skull that fits the form.

If you get one that matches the form eye orbit, then it will
be way to small of a form for the cape!
Antelope have a lot of skin and tissue right over the eye
that must be replaced when mounting.
If you will check the archives, I went into this in detail
about a month ago; use the search button at left.
