Thinning the Shield on a Hog

Submitted by John Ramos on 7/26/01. ( ) 63.118.194.66

I am fleshing a hog hide for tanning. Can I leave a thin layer of the shoulder shield on the skin or do I need to thin down to the hair roots? Please advise, thank you!
