Is there a good locally sold product that can be used to replace the hair sheen in a wet tanned whitetail cape and also help with some unruly hairs around the antler burs?
In a pinch and dont have time to order from a WASCO.
Thanks
Ive used spray furniture polish, and DEP hair gel for years. The day after you finish a mount, run a damp(not wet) sponge over the hair.
Then take DEP hair gel, and apply it to the entire mount. I use DEP extra hold. I think its no.9. It really sets the hair smooth. When your mount is dry, and all finish work is done, spray a little furniture polish on a cloth, and wipe down the hair. This gives a good shine to it, and also leaves a clean smell. Another thing; before you cover your seam with mesh, put a good coat of gel on the hairs there too. When dry you wont be able to tell its been sewed. All of these can be bought at Wal-Mart! NG
Furniture polishes leave residue which will break down in time. Many aren't UV protected and will yellow with age.
Try a tack shop or farm supply, check out their horse care products and look for a hair polish. There are several brands that will work.
At most tack stores or State line tack out of NY.
which kind of presentation for the finished mount you want, first. If you and your customers want a shiney, slicked-down, "taxidermy-look deer" then the heavy duty hair gel definately works the best. It contains a ton of silicone and will hold well, as stated above. If a "softer" look is desired, then use the weakest holding Gel (no silicone). It is easily brushed out after drying, with-out all the fibers of silicone gumming up the hair. With the weaker Gel, however, the hair may require some "convincing" to lay properly, by pinning a towel over it until dry. Then, all the above advice on hair sheen products work nicely over the cleaner hair.
Hey Cur,
Id have to disagree with ya on the yellowing and uv protection. This tip was given to me by a higher up in the professional taxidermy field. The yellowing you are talking of is usually caused by lack of cleaning, smoke, dust buildup, humidity, and age just to name a few.As for the UV protection, you really shouldnt need it. Unless you hang youre mounts outdoors in the sun. In that case you would have a yellowing effect anyway. I guess you could try sunscreen huh?
