Dan,
I have a similar situation with a Bison and have the same question.
I am getting ready to set up a boiling pot to clean the head. Do I submerge the horns or keep them out of the water? The horn bases are rather soft and I don't want to ruin them. Your advise will be appreciated. Thanks, Rob.

Rob,
DO NOT SUBMERGE THE HORNS. I hope you get this message in time. The bison horns are very fragile. The only way I got them off was to let them rot off. It takes a little time. I tried to use your e-mail address and was unable too. There is some very good advice on the archives using the search tool on cleaning the skulls and removing the horns from the skull.

put a couple gabber screws in the horn butt on form on each side, leave them out 1 1/2". put some bondo in the horns and place them over the grabber screws and positon and let bondo set up. that is it.
