choice capes for the taking...

i have noticed several post with frustrated individuals purchasing capes only to receive....well...sounds like scraps in some instances.....im going to let you all in on a little secret that ive been utilizing for years....get friendly with your local deer processor! i have done this at more than one location and found it quite successful....talk with him or her and you will be amazed at how many good capes these individuals "throw away" currently i have an understanding with the local processor who alows me to go and select the capes i want (still on the deer) and he simply charges me $5.00 each....only catch is i have to cape them...well not much of a "catch" as i can cape out 6-8 deer in an hour (that does not include splitting or fleshing obviously)prior to this individual i had an agreement with another that for every cape i wanted i just had to skin the entire deer for him...now how long does that take? 15 mins! its a win win situation the processor gets work or money for something that would normally be discarded and you get capes cheaper than anywere else i can think of (just have to be willing to get your hands a little dirty)
so there it is....sorry for those who do sell capes im not trying to take away any bussiness from you but! everyone likes to save if they can
good luck
Eric

Good point Eric, But............

....... the weather this hunting season was unseasonably warm here in Wisconsin and many hides where doomed before they ever got to the local butcher shops. I took in 6 or 7 that I informed the client there is a real good chance these will require replacement capes.
So therefore some of us don't have any option but to buy replacement capes. This is definitely the exception and not the rule.
I have given out McKenzies guide to proper field care pamphlet to all of my customers to help prevent this in the future. However your
point is a good one.
