I had a hog left out for 4 days with shield on it was salted looks like the hair on top of the shield is slipping i put it back in the freezer . wanted to know if there is a way to fix it . cape has not been fleshed was hoping i could get hair to hold . i was going to send it off to be tanned . i did not realize the shield was so thick salt did not penetrate . it also has a slight oder to it . hate to have to explain to my customer ! MY POOR OVERSIGHT OF THIS MATTER hope someone can help thanks travis

Not to say whats REALLY on my mind. Hogs have very tough hair deeply rooted throughout the shield. Shave the shield off and you may be luckier than you deserve. If it's lost, it's a little late to worry about it now and you just have to explain it all to your customer. I sure hope it's a pure color hog. You MAY be able to get a replacement hide from a game farm if need be.
If hair is slipping, and it's starting to rot, i would chalk it up to
lesson learned the hard way. You might be able to stop more slipping
by shaving the shield down, but that in my opinion would be a waste
of time. Maybe next time you might decide to try one of your own first, before practicing on someone's "trophy"
look for a new cape. I always tell my costumers that "the rot comes before the stink, the odor isnt there to say hey im going to start rotting take care of me, its saying hey I've rotted throw my away. good luck.
thanks for letting me down easy . it just happens its a friend of mine who has just decided to pay for his mount for a change . i have done a few hogs fleshed them myself and i used dry preservative they came out pretty good . this was the first to send of to be tanned. i over looked the shield . i will take your advise and get a new cape . thanks guys for the help
