Longhorn Steer Shoulder Mount Price

Submitted by John C on 2/20/02. ( mraug@yahoo.com ) 209.184.103.198

What would a fair price be to mount a steer in your opinions? I charge 300 for a deer and 500 for an elk. I know my customer plans to resell the steer, so does anyone know what the retail price on a steer would be? I was thinking 650, but just wanted to get some different opinions . Thanks.

$850 or up

Beef are far harder to flesh than bison or buffalo, darn near as bad as a blue bull. then there is the horns, do they want them ruff or finished. Most want them finish, there is scraping and sanding and polishing, not to mention boiling them loose.

Glad you have it and not me.

steer,

well start like this, what is your flat rate charge per hour, if you have the hide professionaly tanned your going to spend a minimum of $130 for someone to flesh and tann it, .....i just finished 2 long horn shoulder mounts, the material for eyes, manequin, hide paste, etc, and tanning was a total of $312 ...if your only charging $650 your not going to make much profit for the amount of time your going to spend on it, ....i charged this gentleman $1250 and that was supplying the hides as well ...hope this helps, you will end up spending about all day mounting this creature, the manequins are limited, and most likely you will have to alter, so plan on spending all day, its not the easiest gamehead to mount as i mount over 300 whitetails and gameheads a year, ......if i do any more i will go up another $250 or more, ...fun, but very aggrivating ...thanks, hope this helps ...scott giles, ...

I'll buy the horns for that much

I've got feedlots full of longhorns around me and have visited with some of the cattlemen about acquiring the horns and capes from a few of the middle-range steers at slaughter. The price on the horns alone has surprised me. A set of 40-inch wide longhorns is going for $800+ around here which means in some cases, the horns are worth more than the entire rest of the steer! Looked at a pretty good mount of a longhorn with ~30-inch horns yesterday in a local art store. Priced on a consignment at $1,500 but no one has paid that price. Six-fifty would be a heckuva bargain 'round here.

Glad to hear...

Suggestions about horns please...

I have two sets of skulls with long horns that I am thinking of selling, could anyone suggest the best places to post them ?
Also, should I polish them before offering them for sale?, or just leave them natural ?

The first is 33.5" tip to tip. in good condition but both sides are not perfectly balanced.

The other is a 40" set, beautifully balanced, good form with a lot of curve.

Thank you for your help!
Roy.

I've looked with no success regarding any information about the so-called watoosie (?) cattle. Has anyone information pertaining to this breed? If so please direct me as to where to locate any supportive information regarding this breed. Thanks, Caren
