Dying a Black Bear skin

Submitted by Alan on 2/27/02. ( ) 63.231.52.244

I'm doing a thin haird black bear rug and need to dye the skin. Is there a good dye on the market that can be bought in the local market? I've used dye from the taxidermy catalog, it's ok but I'm wondering if there's something better out there.

I do know that there are other dyes out there. I was looking as one yesterday at Michel's. I walked past the leather department and they had black dye for leather. I haven't tried it no do I know if it works well.

Use it through your airbrush.

Another Way

When I have large areas on bear that need darkening I use good quality flat black spray paint. Dying takes a long time and is messy. The paint I spray from a distance and use just enough to do the job- let it dry completely then rub with the hair with an old towel to remove excess and any that might want to rub off. The result is more even and generally not detectable. Good luck, Aaron Honeycutt
