sheep horns, help in removing.....

I have done lots of antelope horns and i boil them about 10 minutes and then pull the horn off the core to clean them out....i have never done sheep and just had a corsican....brought in from a game ranch in texas and was wondering if the horns come off the same way? he just wants a skull mount of the head....thanks

Simmer not boil

Tom, you could try it, but dont't boil let it simmer. If you read through the arckives on removing horns alot of posts state not to boil due to possible cracking or warping of horns. It will take longer to get them loose, they are a lot stronger than antelope. Thats if you have a pot big enough to put them in. I was in the same boat two months ago. I was given nine rams to do wondering myself how to remove the horns, never did one before just antelope and a couple of spanish goats. The easist way I found was to place them in a plastic bag tie it off and forget about it for a couple of weeks. They popped off with a little prying, than boil the skull. The only drawback is the lovely aroma, check the archives though lots of info click on search at left, good luck...Paul


soak them in water for a couple of days

Soak the horns and skull in a bucket of water for 2-3 days then take a rubber hammer and hit the horn loose from the core. I have done hundreds this way with no ill effects...DO NOT boil horns!


microwave them

we used to microwave them for a few minutes and they would pop right off
