Bear skinning question

Submitted by Bill L. on 08/06/2002. ( )

Going on a bear hunt soon and was wondering what is the best way to skin for one of those half mounts with the front legs on the mount. Do I cut up the belly and then down the legs, or just cut it down the back to the base of the head? Thanks for any help.

Bill, get with the taxidermist that you are going to have mount your bear, and they will tell you how they'd like it skinned.

I charge extra if they are cut down the legs and belly for a half mount but some guys want them skinned that way,so it's best to check with whoever you're going to use.

Dorsal Cut it

Cut it dorsal - up to the back of the head. Then pull the hide over the front legs - like your removing your socks. You'll have to make short incisions - maybe 6 inches from the pads up the wrists to disconnect the feet from the carcass.
