I had someone ask me a question about an albino white tail mount of his having what appeared to be dandruff. He has just washed the mount in a commercial taxidermy mount cleaner. What could this be?

Deer do contain dander, but this usually isn't present after a hide is tanned and the epidermal layer is preserved. I suspect your "dander" was, in fact, frass (Hey, Stephen Rogers, I used it correctly, didn't I?) Frass is the dropping of epidermal boring insects or dermistids. I thought it looked like sawdust at first until the hair started falling out. Better treat those mounts with some of the topical bug treatments sold by Knoblochs.
I was hoping you would have the answer. Thanks.
