Cleaning Flesh from Buffalo Skull

Submitted by Laura Harmon on 01/28/2003. ( )

What kind of product can I use or mixture of products to remove all the flesh from the skull without having to boil it because this requires removal of the horns. I have heard that packing it in Borax soap works. Is this true?

Maceration will work. Submerge the skull in a large container of water ( preferrably something with a lid ) out of reach of critters and well away from your house. Leave the skull in the water for several weeks. Remove, rinse well, and soak in bacteriacide. The horn covers will come off but that's what you want anyway. You can reattach them later. Then proceed with your usual whitening process. A word of caution, the smell can be a little overpowering. Good luck.
