Attaching Buffalo Horns

Submitted by Mark on 02/04/2003. ( ) 169.135.166.36

I am in the process of mounting my first buffalo. I saw on the site that one person suggested cutting between the horns and tee off about 4" to 5" back from that cut to save on sewing. That worked great and caping the animal was fairly easy. My question is, "Can I attach the horns prior to mounting the cape on the form or do I have to wait until the cape is on the form to attach the horns. Whatever is the easiest way I want to know. Any experience on this would be greatly appreciated.

I always mount the horns first making sure I align them evenly ,I use 1 screw about 8 inches long which I screw to the manikins wood block, then bend it slightly to the horns curve ,then I fill it with bondo and attach it to the manikin then I do the other side and align them both and use a few brads to secure in place then the cape can be worked around the horns easier.
