Moosehead hair falling out!

Submitted by Paul on 02/07/2003. ( ) 65.198.97.226

A friend of mine has a moosehead that he had mounted about 5 years ago. About two years after it got mounted, he noticed the hair would fall out at the slightest touch. He has thought of bringing it back to the taxidermist that did the work, but he is afraid he will get the same quality of work the second time around. I don't know what process they used to mount the head. Does anyone know of something that he can do to the mount now to prevent anymore hair from falling out?

sounds like bugs

He needs to have the mount checked for bugs; if there are small rice sized empty shell casings around the antler burrs, the bugs are eating the mount and will spread to other mounts in the house. It may not be the taxidermists fault. A quality taxidermy shop can advise him on how to get rid of them and I believe there are links on this site about it as well or maybe a search under dermasids you will find discussion about it.. The problem will get worse if ignored.
