Any suggestions on repairing it?

This is a pretty basic taxidermy practice. Depending on where the tear is located, it can either be sewn prior to mounting or it can be mounted and then pinned into position on the mannikin. I would use a good hide paste and would consider one of the newer epoxy type hide pastes. Once cured and the mount has had a chance to dry, repair any further imperfection in this area using Apoxie sculpt during the finishing phase. Hope this helps.
We all get these, do you think every cape we mount is perfect? I only wish!
Trim the bare leather of the cut away and sew it up. I use one of several types of thread, I like Coats and Clark quilting thread, its stiff and does not drag when sewing thin skinned areas.
Small needle make small holes amd are easier to work.
Cood hide paste then super glue and pin will look fine see above about finishing.
Just sew it,Then when you mount it just pin it to keep it from splitting!
