Brisket Cut Repair

Submitted by Mike on 02/27/2003. ( mikeveine@trophyspecialists.com ) 152.163.189.104

I got a deer in that was cut up the brisket during feild dressing. Over the past year, I've been repairing all the cuts and holes using super-glue and it has been working great without any problems. When a repair is glued, the damaged area is hidden much better than by sewing and it's faster. I have yet to glue any large cuts together though. My qustion is, has anybody fixed a large cut up the brisket with super-glue? I'm even thinking of trying super-glue to join the Y-incision to eliminate all sewing. Anybody tried gluing the back of the head and neck?

I wouldn't

Mike, contrary to some belief super-glue is NOT a permanent bond. It will crystallize and flake away. I have sewn several split briskets (just done one last week) and have never had a problem hiding the seam there. The brisket hairs are usually long and are grown ito an overlapping position anyway. If you use a good epoxy hide adhesive like Epo-Grip and a good tight stitch the incision will not pull apart and be seen. As far as gluing the Y incision together good luck. I think several here have already experimented with that method and it does not work. Again I stress that super-glue will not bond the hide permenantly.

Good Luck

Mike I agree with HOSS I've sewn up many brisket over the years the thick hair helps alot. I never use superglue on seams but some do on Y incision for competion mounts. Pin both sides of seam and leave until totally dry, But I would not recomend, after humidity and dring out a few times it will probably seperate. I do use superglue GEL on eyelids as I mount, works pretty good and you don't pin in place.

Mike - this area is probably the easiest to hide sewing. Once you start sewing these repairs you will find it is very easy to do and very easy to hide. In this area I use FireLine or SpiderWire. Make sure the edges are evenly matched (straight) and thinned. Align the two edges and invert them a little (hair to hair) begin your sewing. When done the seem will be al little puckered to the inside (hide side). Now put it on a flat surface and use something (I use my modeling tool) to work the seem flat. Not only does this flatten the incision it will actually tighten it as well. Now go ahead and mount it up as normal. Taxi around the hide (feel with your fingers to be sure the seem is lying flat) groom the hair and I'll bet you will never even see it. Trust me you will sleep better at night knowing that you don't have to worry if the superglue will let go a few years done the road.

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice. I guess I'll just get out my needle and take care of it.
