Dirty Moose Head

Submitted by Rick Streiff on 03/17/2003. ( ) 198.26.118.36

I have a mounted moose head that we had hanging in kind of a bad place where the greasy fumes from the stove get on it and it has become very greasy and covered with dust that has stuck to it. I'm wondering what would be the best way to clean it without ruining it.

Soap and water.

Set it in your driveway and wet it down with a garden hose. With a brush and bucket of soapy water, brush the hair down in the proper direction. Then hose it off again. Use shop air to blow out excess water and let stand in the sun until dry. Then repaint as necessary.

Shampoo

I have had good luck with just shampooing them.
As long as the mount is good and dry you can take it outside andwet it down with the hose(use warm water if its available) shamppo and then rinse with the hose; if needed you can repeat.

When done, use your hand to squeegee out most of the water and then dry with towels.
Moose have hollow hair and it gets brittle with age so don't scrub to
vigorously!
Place a large box fan in front of the mount to speed up drying time.
Get the water on and off as quickly as you can to prevent rehydration of the skin and glue- don't allow to soak!
