Antlers with heat damage

I've looked in archives and wondering if there is another way to clean heat damage antlers. Using the Easy-Off cleaner sounds good but wondering if my antlers have unrepairable damage.
When cooking my husbands antlers to clean the skull plate off, they were left unattended regretably too long and recieved a discoloration of a dark red/dark brown on the back side of the antler base (burrs)from touching the side of the pan of the slow cooker.
Do you think this is just on the surface or the excessive heat actually 'burned' the antler? Has this happened to anyone before that someone is willing to admit and give me ideas on how to clean them?
They've been soaking in water ever sense.
