What is "dry rot" on a cape. I'm thinking of buying one that has "some dry rot on the head." It's an old cape, but I never heard of dry rot on one.

Ed, I don't think the term is proper. From what I've seen, the description might fit, but this condition is caused by poorly tanned hides aging, drying, cracking and disintegrating.
it is a structural break down of the skin caused when sulfuric acid is used as the pickle not sure of the chemistry behind this. it happens over time the best way to avoid this is to put your tanned hides in a freezer until ready to mount if it is going to be over three months till you mount them. if you don't it will actually fall to pieces when you rehydrate it. hope this helps.
