this has never happened to me, until today!
i have a deer i mounted a couple of days ago drying, all was well for 2 days then i was brushing, LIGHTLY and it started to slip in a 2by2 inch spot.
it had no scars or problems on the neck, and it showed no sign of slipping until now.
any ideas, i'd rather not have this happen again,
i know there are several things that can cause slipping but why two days later
thanks in advance

You may hve thinned the hide a little to thin in that area . Or mabe that area wasnt properly tanned.more than likley just to thin

I know how you feel. Every now and then you get a deer in and, everything seems fine. Right! You go through your usual process and then BAM! WHAT THE #$%@! Unless you shoot, skin, tan the hide yourself you will get screwed from time to time and, not know why. Try to work with what you got if possible. Don't kill yourself trying to save something that's not salvageble. I definately feel for you. Good Luck!

.......STOP brushing it and give it a chance to set up and dry! 2 days is a bit soon to be doing that.
Jen is right. More info is needed. Home tan? comercial Tan? DP?

Till then....just leave it alone and let it dry!

Take care,
Dave

thanks

it was tanned with liqua tan, by a friend. but i BARELY touched it and the hair just came out in a big peice. i've seen slippage but not on a cape that looked perfect and then 2 days later pow!, it wasn't shaved thin or anything obvious like that. I've decided to throw a whole new cape on , but thanks for the input.

It would seem

That the hide was not properly tanned, moisture in or on the hide allowed Bacteria to grow on it during those two days, causing the slippage, after mounting, I Only make fine adjustments, I never brush of tug at the hide until dry, groom it up as soon as you finish mounting, and leave it to dry.
