After submerged horns are removed

Well, I tried searching for the answer in the archives but could not find exactly what I was looking for. I have a european mount of a corsican ram to do and I wanted to submerge the skull/horns in water. This is my first and I read alot about boiling and putting the skull in a trash bag, etc. I would like to try this method but everything I found to read would stop after the horns had been removed after been submerged about 1-2 weeks in the water. What do I do if I am successful of removing the horns. Do I cut some of the inner core off and submerge the skull back in the water , will the bacteria clean off the skull clean or do I boil off the rest of the meat of the skull. I read a how-to skull cleaning method from McKenzie on Dan Verrips way to clean a skull but it was a bear skull and wasn't sure if it would be the same. He submerged the bear skull in water and just replaced the water every 2 weeks or so until the skull was completely clean. Sorry so long. Thanks, Teo

Clip the cores

And resubmerge your ram's skull in the water. Take it out about once every week and hose it off. It will take about a month on a ram's head because of the fat involved. You'll probably still end up having to cut that skull cap pad off anyway.

After removing the sheaths, place them in the freezer in a plastic bag
( this helps keep the smell down in the freezer). You can then boil the\
skull with sal soda. You will need to clip the ends of the cores off.
inch or two should do. After boiling clean, let the skull stand for
a day or two. Then soak in peroxide overnight. Let dry a day or
two. Now for the sheaths. Take them out of the freezer and clean
them real good inside and out with hot water and basycrl-nu or other
disinfectant. dry them off good with a towel and attach to the sheaths
with an epoxy.

Another Idea

Regardless of what type of horn I'm removing from the core, I always fill the horn to within 1/4 inch of the base (turn horn upside down) with borax. Now mix up some plasterand pour it over the borax forming a plug about 1/4 inch thick over the borax. This plaster plug prevents the bases from shrinking down at all (so you don,t have to freeze them. Now I boil the cores and let them dry til I'm ready to mount. At that time, I crack the plaster plug and ppour out the borax. Works great.
