Bull Elk odor

Can someone give me a product or a procedure to eliminate the

fowl smell from a fresh bull elk cape? Thanks

WASH the hide

It's the urine smell mixed with pine that can be pungent. Epo-Grip Bloodout/Degreaser, Van Dyke's Eliminator, and Bruce Rittel's Safety Solvent will work, but realistically, any higher pH soap will also work. Just be careful to dilute the soap and don't DON'T walk away from the cape. No more than 15 or 20 minutes followed by plenty of rinsing will assure you don't create slippage.


Baking soda

I've gotten the smell out of some extra ripe antelope horns with it...put a box or two in enough water to cover the cape after a good washing with soap and water. Like George states, don't walk away from it, 15 to 20min. max...I'd then recommend dropping the pH by either going straight to the pickle(after rinsing very well or you'll raise you pH there)or by using a vinegar rinse...
