Before I started doing taxidermy myself I had taken all my trophies to a well respected taxidermist in my area. Every mounted deer I got back had a really nice smell to it. I thought it was a leathery smell at first, then I thought it kind of smelled like white gas or kerosene. Whatever the smell is people really like it and I have had a few of my customers ask about it. All my capes are done though a comercial tannery and so are his. Problem is he won't give up the secret? Anybody now?

dont soak them in gas because if someone light a cigarate beside it poof! its gone
it is probably cape sheen, I put it on all my mounts the last thing to be done when I finish a head, just put some on a paper towel and wipe it on mount in the direction the hair lays but not on painted areas as this will remove the paint, gives the mount a nice smell. you can get a quart for apprx. $8.00. hope this helps.
Seems to me the white gas/coleman fuel would evaporate fairly quickly and not leave a long-lasting residual odor. But, I could certainly be wrong about this...
I suspect dwl is right on his assumption, but I've had customers who brought their mounts BACK because of that smell. Had to set them in the sunshine a few hours to have it dissapate, but you'd better ask ALL your customers before you start trying to please just a few of them.
Check the smell of them out of get some new car smell goody to wipe the mount down with.
I spray hair sheen on all my deer just before they go out the door. Its got kindof a sweet smell to it.
