I have a customer that insisted on turning his own mule deer ears and made a mess of them, the rest of the cape seams to be fine. It seams like I have heard somebody on here talk about sewing on replacement ears. Is that a posibility or should I just find a replacent cape and tell him to leave the caping up to the experts. It sounds like a lot of work and a big chance to have a lot of problems trying to line up the hair patterns around the ears but am willing to try. Would like to hear from anybody out there that has tried it in the past with any success at all. Thanks Dan

I did it with a elk once the customer shot half of the elks ear off, I just replaced one though. I just cut the bad ear off at the base of the ear butt and sewed another one in where the hair is thick. worked out great, don't be afraid to try this, but remember charge the customer extra for this because time is money and maybe that will make him not mess with the specimen next time! good luck.
Being the customer distroyed the ears,I would either make him pay for a replacement cape,or tell him to sew the ears on himself.
It can be done, but he will probable complain when it doesn't look just right.Besides, when people see it,they will know that you mounted it.
It may be in your best interest, not to mount it at all.Best of luck!
That ear replacement bit has seen some popularity on here of late, but NO WAY would I go to such a bother. There are too many color variations between deer, much less between facial and neck hair for me to waste that kind of time. I tire of this, "The customer is always right". It's MY time and MY talent, he can be someone else's customer for all I care. Replace the hide.
I always wonder WHERE the ears come from. Are they cut from a perfectly good hide? Then what do you do with THAT hide after you've destroyed it? Either way, there's an extra hide in this equation every time.
Thanks Guys, I think I will just find a replacement cape, I agree about trying to match the different colors of capes, it might just be impossible. Thanks again, Dan
