best adhesive for elk mount?

Submitted by Ed on 05/31/2003. ( ) 152.163.252.232

Looking for opinions/suggestions on what's the best choice for large game such as Elk. I'm a deer guy, only do a few Elk. I'm familar with Epo-Grip Hide Adhesive. Should I or could I use the Epo-Grip around the face upper neck/head area and a less pricey adhesive over the rest of the LARGE shoulders and "body." Perhaps using Epo-Grip around the contours of the brisket etc.? Not trying to cut corners, just exploring my options.

Elk are "freight trains" compaired to lttle ole southern whitetails!

Thanks in advance.

You are already using one of the best hide pastes around so why look to cut corners or options. The only other product that comes close to it is Buckeye supreme.
If a person learns to charge enough they would never have to worry about using top quality hide paste. The price is can be less than $5.00 a deer or possibly $10.00 an elk. Pretty cheap now isn't it.

You didn't say WHICH Epo-Grip you were using: epoxy or water based. It will probably come as a shock to some of you, but I've come to love the water based Epo-Grip on large and lifesized game for it's working time. I still have to do some minor carding that wouldn't be necessary with the epoxy, but it goes on quite smooth and holds well.

I wholeheartedly agree with what Frank said. I'm a firm believer in the fact that you gotta pay to play.

Use both.

I have used both on large games. In the depressions and head area, peducles and down the seam, I use the 2 part.

Over the large shoulers and side of the next I use the water based.

I use Buckeye Supreme

On my elk I have used Buckeye supreme with excellent results. Not a knock against Epo-Grip just stating the results I have gotten with Buckeye Supreme. Whatever you are using, why change if you get great results?

I have to agree with you to some extent, BUT, unwillingness to change just to see if another product is better is a great learning experience. You either learn it ISN'T or it IS better. I'm an old guy, but I think that always pressing the envelope is healthy for the industry. Paper mannikins "worked", but I'm sure glad that foam ones came along and I tried them instead. Still, your point is valid. If I was doing an elk for a customer, I surely wouldn't use it as a test bed to see if another product worked just as well or better. I save that kind of stuff for my brother-in-law's mounts. LOL
