I have a few sets of sheds that I picked up the last few years and I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on fixing them? They have pretty good color on one side but the other side is full of cracks and bleached. I tried to do one of the pairs but the stain just seemed to soak in and it turned out pretty bad. I was just wondering if there is a way to fill in or seal up the cracks so staining will work? Any staining and repairing tips that you have would be very helpfull because I'm pretty much a beginner at this. Thanks

Fix hairline cracks with bondo. Make sure you clean and lightly sand the area first. When staing, first prime the antler with a flat latex paint (bone colored). Hope this helps.
When dealing with real antler I like to use wood putty to fill hairline cracks. It adds no strength but works perfectly for aesthetics. Then use potassium permanangate from a drugstore and you'll get totally real looking antler. I only use paint as the base coat for my reproduction antlers before staining. That way it keeps the casting medium from showing its yellow colour that it developes with age.
There are 8 on "staining weathered antlers" and 117 on just "staining antlers". I don't recall Bondo being mentioned before though wood putty might have been. NONE of these, however, work as well as a couple already in the archives. Give it a look.
