How do I properly clean a bison skull?

Submitted by Victor Cooper on 08/10/2003. ( tbkrockingv@yahoo.com ) 65.163.226.13

I was recently given 2 bison skulls that had been killed the same day & I want to know the best way to clean & preserve them with the horns intact.

Some people have told me to boil the skulls. Some say bury them. Some say put them in an ant pile.

I don't want to damage the skulls in my attempts to preserve them. What do I do?

Help!

Thanks

Try the orange button on the left. Fill in the blank with "skull cleaning" and enjoy!

you'll be glad you did... the bettles will enjoy them more than you wil. You still need to get as much meat off of them as possible and then freeze and pop off the sheaths. In the meantime, research out a beetleist in the trade magazines or online.

If you're not in a hurry here's an easy way to really clean a skull well. Put it in a tub or barrel of water completely submerged. Forget about it for a month or so. Let nature take its course. (Be sure to put your container out of reach of the neighborhood dogs!) Remove the skull and take it to the carwash or hose it off. Let it dry in the sun for a few days. Presto, one clean skull. Boiling is not good. It will damage the fragile bones in the nose.
