I just acquired a Civil War period leather accoutrement made from finished (black) leather meant to be originally pliable. It is now stiff/hard and would crack if bent. I have been told to seal the piece in a poly/plastic bag with either Lexol (I hate that stuff...) or Leather New (sp?) and wait until the glycerin outgases and the "vapor" penetrates and softens the leather. Additionally, not to put either product directly onto the piece, but, simply saturate a cotton cloth and place into the bag, then wait. Does this technique seem real or any other suggestions you might have?
Thank you in advance,
John Mattson
