anyone ever use oil clay to model facial features?

I have in the past used oil clay to model facial features on forms.
I find I have more control of the clay and can do it at an earlier time due to the clay never hardening. Once the hide paste is on, the face seems to dry as hard as when I use water clay. The only problem I can see with this method is if the mount is exposed to extreme heat, the clay would possibly get soft.
Does anyone out there have experiences of note about using
oil clay instead of water clay?

Thanks for your time,

lee

The oil will seep through.

Over time the oil will seep out and discolor the area. Even if you use a 2 part hide paste, many times the 2part will be impaired from setting up.

Use a artist paint brush to shape the potters clay and you may see a difference.

One of the first commercial game mounts, and the guy put it above his fire place. Apart from the goo that seaped through, my eyes which were also set in oil clay had that sunken look like a dead deer.

The long and the short of all this is it doesnt hold up so dont bother.

I use it

I have always used oil clay, because I can set the eyes ahead like you mentioned. It's called Roma Plastina or something like that. I've had it for years and have never seen any oil. I often wonder if the drying mount will move the soft clay, but potters clay or critter clay is soft while the mount is drying too, so I don't know the difference. Anyhow I haven't had any problems using it.
