How do I remove smell and oil from whale vertebra cheaply

I found a whale carcass on a Cape Cod beach. I removed one vertebra , and cleaned off all the flesh. It smells very bad and I have been told that it will drip oil for some time. I want to display it indoors. So how do I remove the smell and keep the oil from dripping inside my house? What is the cheapest way to accomplish this at home?

Cleaning up Whale bones isnt an easy task! I worked with the New Bedford Whaling museum helping them degrease and clean up some Whale bones for a reconstruction - and it wasnt easy!

First the bones were steam cleaned to bleed off as much grease as possible. Then the marrow was ground out of each bone. Then they soaked them in our Degreasing agent Super solvent (SS-618) solution for 1-2 days. It was the only way to make them presentable for the display without grease bleeding through.

Did anyone mention

That picking up any part of a whale that has washed up is against federal law?
