Another Skull/Odor question

Submitted by Scott on 09/06/2003. ( ) 66.119.33.135

I have de-greased my bear skull after the beetles finished. I then tried soaking it in a bleach solution two times to de-odorize it. It still has a slight smell. Will that go away when I seal it or do I need to soak it in downy like some suggested in the archives? Also will Varithane clear work to seal?

I've cleaned a lot of skulls and usually I just soak them in peroxcide then set them in the sun for about a week....after sitting in the sun for a while the smell is gone. Have you tried that yet?

I have had it in the sun between peroxide (50-strength)treatments for about three weeks. It only smells if I put my nose to it. From a couple of feet away I can't smell a thing, but I'm worried if it is locked in a trophy room it will build up or ants will smell it. It is as clean as beetles can get it and it was soaked twice in one cup bleach to 1 gal. water for ten minutes each time. I tried to lighten it three times and degreased it with citris orange cleaner once. Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to give it to the client until it is perfect and compared to the sheep skulls I usually do, it isn't. This is the first bear I've done and it looks okay, but not perfect. Any help would be appreciated.
