Preparing antlers for mounting

Submitted by Jeff on 09/06/2003. ( ) 208.186.89.243

My Caribou was shot on 8-27-03. The antlers were sawed off through the eyes so there is still a small part of the skull attached. For shipping purposes, they were split in half. They are now back at my house, partly bloody, soft, and much of the velvet still on (some velvet is off do to small white worms?).

I want to mount them using a simple skull cap and wood plaque. Could anyone provide some pointers for a novice at this? For example, best way to get the velvet, blood, and skull off and then how to go about mounting these.

Thanks.

......Yesterday's entry in the Gamehead category about Bloody Caribou Antlers.

The little white worms are maggots, the velvet should have been stripped off right away and the blood is very difficult to get out.

Why didn't you come here and ask the questions on antler care BEFORE you went on the hunt?
