I am mounting some fresh moose antlers on a piece of ash. Do I have to preserve the skull? Is cleaning it well not enough? I am not leaving the skull exposed, it'll be covered with spray styrofoam and velvet. Also, these horns are quite faded distally and the owner wants them darkened-what is the best option. I have used wood stains in the past. I've also heard that people use potassium permanganate. Any good advice out there.
