Getting dried skin off of skull?

Submitted by Mark J on 10/06/2003. ( msj@advnet.net ) 66.82.9.40

I recently bought a nice set of antlers of a whitetail deer. It may be a couple of years old and the skin was never stripped from the skull and now has dried very hard. Is there a solution that can be applied to re-soften the skin to allow it to separate from the skull?

Soak in H2O

Give it a soak (overnight) in plain water. Most of the hair will start to fall out when you tug on it slightly. When this occurs, you should be able to remove the skin by skinning it with a scalpel or sharp knife.

like Jim said but it most likely will take longer than overnight. Be patient and let it soak, checking it every other day or so. The skin will loosen up and just fall off.

You can also boil the scull plate in soda ash for 15 min. The skin will turn into a jelly like consistence.

God bless
