antelope horn smell

Submitted by Jim on 10/11/2003. ( ) 66.231.22.202

I looked in the archives and seen little.
What is the best way to get rid of the smell after being taken apart?
Thanks, Jim

Goat horns

What I do is take the shells and fill them with DP (Borax will work, but I love Bess Maid by Touchstone. This DP has moth crystals and it just works best for me.) Dump the DP out of one into the other and then dump the remainder back into your container. Just that coating works for the shells. NOW the cores. I clip that flabby end off and set them outside. After a couple days, I take a torch and scorch the hair that eventually would have formed another horn off. I doubt that's necessary, but it makes more room for my epoxy to hold those cases on. DO NOT BONDO. If you Bondo them, they CAN and sometimes WILL fall off. There's a horror story of mine in the archives about that little trick in front of a customer. Use epoxy and be safe.

After removing

the horn sheaths from the bone cores, boil the skull plate to remove ALL membrane and new horn growth on the cores themselves. While boiling the skull plate and cores I also dip the horn sheath full of the boiling water and pour it out...then repeat this process about three times...then place the horn sheaths in the freezer. You are killing all bacteria with the hot water and freezing the interior surface enviroment from having any recurring growth. I also immerse, overnight, the cleaned skull plate with cleaned cores in Hydrogen Peroxide overnight to finish the process..haven't had a problem for years. I use this same technique for all horned game...pronghorns, sheep, goats, etc., and with the same exacting results.
