Old Velvet Antlers

I recently recieved a set of velvet antlers from a taxidermist who had the antlers for 4 years. I killed the deer during archery season and the taxidermist ended up going out og business, so I barely managed to get them back. The velvet is half rotted of and the other half is still good. I have decided I want to strip the velvet and just replace the velvet. I was wondering how to strip the velvet off. I beleive the the antlers were taken care of with fermaldihide when I dropped them off, but know because the lack of care they are rotting. Is there an easy way to strip the velvet? Then I was also wondering if anyone knew where I can send the antlers to get them re-done for a decent price and good quality. I would appreciate any information anyone has. Thank You Curtis Wilson

Curtis, Sorry to hear you had problems but glad you got the antlers back. Research Mannikins offers the artificial velvet service- not cheap but very real looking. You can soak the antlers in water till the velvet rehydrates then strip it off- might take a week or more to soften that old velvet. I did one recently and it soaked about 2 weeks before slipping off. Research will do the whole job for you if you wish.--Aaron H.
