American Buffalo horn: suitable for pistol grips?

Submitted by Mark Gallaher on 11/12/2003. ( wheelgun@tds.net ) 69.21.16.153

I've got a couple pre-war S&W revolvers, and am curious as to whether Buffalo horn would be a good material to use for custom grips? I see lots of other antler types used for this purpose, and have seen what I assume if Asian water buffalo horn grips, but didn't recall ever seeing any handgun grips made from American Buffalo (Bison) horn.

Anyone have anything to share?

Thanks,

Bison horns are hollow

I'm not sure if they would work, as they are hollow in the center. I know they will make good black powder horns.

Hmmm........

That could present an obstacle. 8^O

Thanks Hacksidermist. I really had no idea that the horns were hollow, and never would've guessed. I just happened onto this forum and it occurred to me that this might be a good place to ask that question.

Not many Bison here in New England, only swamp donkeys (moose) 8^D
