Can't find the answer to this one in the orange button room.....
When do you guys wash your capes? We are getting deer capes in to be head mounted and they are extemely tick infested! We are using the Auto tanner to tan the capes. Please give suggestion as to when & how to wash the ticks away.........
Thanks

I aquired one several years back, all it needed was a new timer from Sears and Roebuck. cape wash and spin the water out, then either freeze or tan, I would split and tan unless you are swamped.
We do have one (a washing machine) use it just to spin dry the capes. Do you use the gentle cyle on the washing machine and do you use any soap?
We generaly wash and rise in sink but it doesn't seem to be cleaning the ticks off very well. any other suggestions............
I always use a spray bottle filled with bleach.
spray the hide and let set for a few minutes. This
will kill the ticks and will not hurt the hide or hair.
Pull the ticks off and continue as usuall.
I even wash my turkey and other birds in it.
I use the heavy duty cycle on capes and skins, even on the turkey.
I will triple the soap and gentle cycle for waterfowl and and gamebirds also use a full setting for the water, seems hides and skins clean up better for me that way.
If a cape has lots of ticks, we spray it with flea and tick spray we get at Wally World. Split and salt as usual. Tan cape as usual. After mount is dry, ticks will comb out very easily with a dog brush. It's a waste of time to spend 1/2 hour picking ticks off of a fresh cape, they will brush right out after mount is dry.
This may sound stupid John but what kind of soap do you use? Doesn't soap make the waters PH level go up.
I'm just curious, I've never tried that before.
