Try to get close

If you look through enough catalogs, you should be able find a form that will very close to what you need. I would not get a form that is too long on the eye to nose measurement unless you plan on altering it. I measure my capes in the following manner: if I measure over the hair I mark the cape one inch smaller then the actual measurement, if I measure over the carcass of the deer, I mark the cape one inch larger then the actual measurement. I generally order forms that are one half to one inch smaller in the neck measurments then my capes to assure proper fit. Form measurement are pretty much exact in dimentions. What you order is what you get.

Hope that help,
Pete

Logic Should Tell You.....

When the deer dies and starts to dry out the eyeball shrinks back from the eyelid, not the other way around. This measurement is not that critical. IMHO the other two have to be taken on the carcas whenever possible. Measuring over the skin and hair is much too inexact for my use. If you must measure just the cape, do it on the cape when it is ready for mounting and not the raw cape.

To illustrate my last point, the next time you skin a deer head try this. Get the skin completely off the head, then put it back on the head and see how it fits....

Hey Pete I am new to Taxidermy. How will using DP affect the forms that I order. Should I order like you have suggested to Gary?

DP

I don't have very much experience with DP and I think I am the wrong guy to ask. My assumtion is that you would probably follow the same rule, in fact, you may be able to get away with a larger form because the skin will stretch more then with a wet tan. However, the shrinkage is greater with DP when the skin dries, so use a good adhesive such as Epo-Grip two part epoxy to reduce drumming.

Anybody else on this one?

thanks joe
