Fiberglass finish coat resin on antlers question

Submitted by Bucksnort on 02/04/2004. ( ) 24.237.122.169

I have searched archives and had no luck yet. What may I add to clear fiberglass finish coat resin to flatten or reduce the gloss?
Plan to hang the antlers outside to see how they weather in time.
Thank you in advance.

Why?

Why are you putting clear resin over your antlers? They won't get chalky - but I can tell ya right now they are still going to fade and discolour. Clear polyester resin has no UV blocking properties. Better would have been a UV resistant urethane like used for painting homes. "Varathane" brand has lots of options in lots of finishes. Look for terms like 'non yellowing' and 'uv resistant'.

I have tried Varathane products, polyurethane products, varnishes and UV resistant products in the past. In time the coatings peel and yellow. I read a note in these forums a while back that mentioned using clear resin on skulls and antlers to be hung outside. Thought I'd try it. I'd rather have a non-glossy finish though.
Thanks for anyone's recommendations.
