I received a deer head this weekend. It's been frozen for about two years. I let it thaw to skin it, only to find out its freezer burned pretty good. Had a heck of a time getting the cape off! The areas burned the most are the on the face. The ends of the ears are dried too much to get fully turned. One eye is in the same condition. The skin between the antlers and the bridge of the nose is also pretty dry. Does anyone know if this cape can be salvaged? Is there anything I can do to the ears to soften them up so I can get them turned completely. Thanks for any help you can give.

Someone may blast this idea, but it has served me well. For a badly dried cape i soak it {submerged} in a solution of salt water for several days or longer. An older now retired taxidermist showed me this and i have re-hydrated about four or five whitetails and several caribou capes that were salted on the tundra and returned very dried. The formula i've always used has been two pounds of salt for every gallon of water. Thats all i've used and never had any troubles. P.S i've always kept this bath very cool and change the solution if it gets too dirty. Good luck.
I've been looking through the supply catalogs for some Stop Rot. Anybody know where to find it?
