I recently had a deer come in that i tanned with Lutan F and when i thawed it out to mount it, i noticed it had a huge hole right in the armpit area. Big nasty hole like someone shot it with a bazooka. I was concerned that after repair it wouldn't look right because of where the hole was, so i decided to throw it away and use a different cape. I told the customer that this might be what i would do. So i put the wet cape in a plastic bag and set it on the steps in my shop. I left it there for 2-3 weeks, the temp in my shop is about 65 degrees. When i was cleaning my shop i decided to look at it and see what 3 weeks in a bag would do to it. to my amazement it was still in excellent condition. I pulled on the hair, sniffed it , looked it over real good and found nothing wrong with it. I figured i would go ahead and sew it and see what it looked like on the form. Well i ended up mounting it and it looks great. So i guess if you do a good job tanning the hides are pretty durable.
